Context and Scope of the Project

LGfL along with the 2,684 connected London Schools will delivered a Pan-London video conferencing event that raised awareness for Science week and, Science within the curriculum, in Key stages two, three and four.

Science Live built on the national work that has so far been achieved by the Video Conferencing Services Project (VCSP) (www.ukerna.ac.uk/community/schools/vc/).

LGfL and partners hosted a two whole-day video conferencing event. One for the primary sector and another for secondary.

Although this project was initially aimed at London Schools, participation was welcomed from other RBCs, countries from around the UK and European schools who are members of their regional academic network (www.terena.nl/activities/compendium/).

This project utilised the Janet Video Conferencing Service (JVCS), the national video conferencing service for UK schools (www.jvcs.ja.net), currently funded by the DfES through Becta for the schools sector.

A key aspect of this project was to promote the use of broadband and video conferencing within the UK schools sector, and to demonstrate the ease in which an expert (Science content providers) can be bought into the classroom using a broadband service connected to the National Education Network. Schools that presented were all using Broadband technology and JVCS.
