Seven key principles that underpin the leadership of professional learning
Contributors to London’s Learning see seven main principles which underpin the leadership of professional learning:

PRINCIPLE 1: Leadership of CPD
The headteacher, the school leadership team and the governing body are totally committed to developing the school as a professional learning community and this commitment is distributed across all team leader roles with over all responsibility for CPD located within the school leadership team.
PRINCIPLE 2: CPD for all staff
Every member of staff is encouraged to participate in a programme of learning within a school framework and to share their learning.
PRINCIPLE 3: CPD, School Improvement and Performance Management
CPD, Performance Management and School Improvement are fully integrated.
PRINCIPLE 4: High quality opportunities for CPD
Professional development opportunities within the school’s framework are designed to be of a high quality, directly related to learning and teaching and with clearly stated outcomes.
PRINCIPLE 5: Partnership
High quality professional development opportunities within the school’s framework include partnership working wherever appropriate.
PRINCIPLE 6: Resources
Professional development opportunities within the school’s framework are appropriately resourced and managed to ensure that time, funding and people are used effectively and creatively to support learning.
PRINCIPLE 7: Evaluation of Impact
The evaluation of the impact of professional development on teaching and learning is integral to the school’s monitoring and evaluation process already in place.
The above principles are explored in depth:
- with supporting examples of practice in SECTION 3
