Chartered London Teacher status

Chartered London Teacher status (CLT) is designed to recognise and reward the skills and expertise of London teachers. CLT status was launched in September 2004 and the first teachers received the status in November 2006.

CLT status will:

  • Celebrate the quality of professional practice and commitment to continuing professional development by London teachers
  • Recognise the distinctive challenges and opportunities of teaching in London
  • Be part of, not additional to, a teacher's day-to-day work and integrated with performance management arrangements
  • Carry with it the award of a £1,000 lump sum on achievement of CLT status
  • Build on best professional practice, including observation of others and teachers sharing experience
  • Offer scope to combine with further professional development activities and accreditation *

Chartered London Teacher status provides a framework to recognise and reward your professional practice in London. To further develop and extend your practice, you may want to take advantage of the wide range of CPD opportunities that are available across London. All London Higher Education Providers support the CLT status and have CPD opportunities that link with the CLT standards. You may want to contact your local university to discuss what CPD opportunities suit your needs and interests most closely. How do you achieve CLT status?

CLT status is available to those working within the Greater London area. Participation is voluntary. Teachers can start working towards the status at any time but will be awarded CLT status only if they have crossed the threshold. The achievement of performance management objectives related to a teacher's day-to-day work will be the evidence of meeting the CLT standards. There would be no need for the separate collection of portfolios of evidence. Teachers' learning from lesson observations would also count as evidence towards CLT status. Teachers will be encouraged to undertake a number of lesson observations in other schools, some of which could be carried out on closure days. Any teacher who meets the standards will gain the status, key worker living points and the one-off payment of £1,000.

How long does it take?

From entry to profession it will normally take five years to achieve CLT status, or two years if already beyond the threshold. You need a minimum of four years' service in London to be awarded CLT status. At the end of August, 2007, over 38,800 teachers had registered.

CLT standards linked to national standards

Following the publication of the national standards for teachers in 2007, the 12 CLT standards have been integrated into the national framework.  CLT standards and national standards

What do teachers need to do?

Register. There is a very simple and unbureaucratic process and teachers can register electronically or download the registration form at www.clt.ac.uk.

  • Notify your school that you wish to work towards the CLT and use the CLT standards to help guide your performance management process. Then, through your professional practice, demonstrate that you meet the standards for Chartered London Teacher status. The CLT involves four themes, plus a focus on a particular issue within a teacher's practice that involves overcoming barriers to pupils' learning.
  • Headteachers need to be registered assessors: see www.clt.ac.uk/downloads/assessorsform.doc
