Some of the pupils in year 5 and 6 at our school, St. Mary of the Angels, went down to Tavola owned by Celebrity Chef Alistair Little. We interviewed him and he shared his kitchen secrets:

 

1. What was your ambition when you were younger?

I wanted to be an architect.

 

2. How did you start your career?

In my mid 20’s, I worked as a waiter in a wine bar and the head chef left and they were looking for people to take his place, so I wanted to do it and I got the job.

 

3. What is your favourite dish to eat and cook?

Beef stew is my favourite dish to eat and cook.

 

4. When you started your career, were you inspired by family cooking or famous inspiration?

They weren’t any. But my mother was a great inspiration.

 

5. Did your friends and family know that your

ambition was to cook?

I liked cooking. It was my hobby.

 

6. Are any of your friend’s chefs?

Yes. Some of my friends are chefs. They work in a

Restaurant in Kensington Church Street.

They even want to do school dinners.

7. Can you tell us about some TV work? Have you ever been on Ready Steady Cook?

I’ve been on Ready Steady Cook many times. I was on the Green Peppers team.

 

8. Have any celeb’s come and eaten one of your

Dishes in your restaurant before?

A lot of celebs have eaten my dishes such as:

Kylie Monigue, Robert D’nero and many more.

9. Are you a parent? If you are, would you encourage your children to eat healthily?

I am a parent. We try to encourage them to eat healthily .It’s difficult with the teenagers.

 

10. How do you feel about healthy eating?

It’s a good thing. I do try and do it myself.

 

11. What was your favourite food when you were

Younger?

Well it had to be Fish and Chips!

 

12.Do you ever eat junk food such as McDonalds?

I do eat McDonalds occasionally.

13. Do you agree that children should eat two fish oils

Per day, said on GMTV?

To me it is a good thing; but there is too many

Sardines.

 

14. Do you have a cook book?

I do have a cook book. Several ones. There all out of

Print now.

 

 

When we were at Tavola, Alistair kindly gave us his famous recipe for Tavola "Angel" Flapjacks!!

Ingredients: 300g Butter (unsalted)

220g Demerara sugar

30g Blade Treade

80g Golden Syrup

½ kg Oats

 

Set oven to 170*c.

Grease at 2cm deep baking tray.

(Or use non-sticky backing paper)

Melt the butter and mix with all the other ingredients. Pour into tray bake 20/30 minutes allow to cool before cutting up.
