Author battles to save the libraries By Mohamed Abdin PENNY-pinching council chiefs are planning to slash services to the community by closing a staggering SIX libraries. The proposal is one of three announced at the forward plan select committee meeting in February and is due to be seen by the executive at Brent Council shortly. Best-selling author and Brent resident Zadie Smith blasted the decision, saying it could affect the less wealthy members of the community. Brent Council called the plan ‘modernisation’ and said that it was trying to increase the number of people using libraries. The spokesman believed that no proposals had formally been presented to the Brent Council’s executive to modify the number of libraries in the borough. |
