What do they do?
The role of the Governing Body is to support the school, the staff, the children and the parents. The main areas of governor involvement are:
- setting the school’s aims and policies
- improving standards of teaching and achievement
- setting the school’s budget plan and monitoring expenditure
- acting as a link between the local community and the school
- dealing with complaints about the school
- drawing up an action plan after an Ofsted inspection and monitoring its success.
How does the governing body work?
The Governing Body meets once each term and all governors are expected to sit on at least one of the committees, which meet termly to discuss specific issues in detail.
What are the committees?
Curriculum – monitors and reviews changing requirements of the curriculum, and analyses results and overall performance.
Finance – manages and reports on the overall financial position of the school.
Staffing – oversees recruitment and staffing needs.
Premises – deals with all matters relating to the building and school site.
Separate sub-committees or working parties are set up on an ad-hoc basis to deal with specific tasks.
