Slow Worm

 

Otherwise known as the legless lizard, these snake-like reptiles have eyelids and can close their eyes.

 

Vertebrate: has bones.

Reptile: dry skin with scales.

Habitat: forests, shady fields and parks in Europe, including England.

Eats: worms, slugs, grasshoppers and spiders. It is a carnivore.

 

Fascinating Facts

They are nocturnal, hiding during the day under rotting logs or in burrows.

They have the same colour as their surroundings (camouflage).

They are colour blind and use taste and smell when hunting for their prey. Their tongues are used for this.

They defend themselves from predators by thrashing their bodies from side to side.

If caught, they can surprise predators by dropping off their tails and so may escape.
