Our prospectus says....... "This area of the curriculum enables the children to identify and investigate needs and solutions in the context of home, school, recreating and the community. They are asked to use their imagination and experience to explore ideas, develop plans, achieve an outcome and evaluate it. At the same time the children are given practical tasks to learn how to use appropriate tools safely and to develop the skills necessary for the different tasks. By taking apart and assembling various objects they learn how things are made: a valuable experience. Design and Technology includes other areas of the curriculum, mainly Language, Maths, Art and Science."

What is DT? How many of us often complain about the poor design of a piece of equipment that we use daily? It maybe the height of our kitchen work surfaces, the function buttons on our video recorder, or the handles on our cups that simply do not allow for easy stacking in cupboards! We can always make suggestions to improve the ease of use of these familiar products. At Chase Lane Infants’ School our Design and Technology lessons give the children the opportunity to investigate how well familiar products and objects actually work and to consider for whom, or for what, they are designed. The children are encouraged to ask questions, such as ‘is this the right tool for the job?’ The answers to such questions will develop their ability to solve practical problems, employing skills they have acquired, creativity and imagination.

We make models

And during Book Week one year we made masks of our favourite book characters. |
What DT do we teach at our school and how do we teach it? In DT the children are taught :-
- To look at and talk about familiar products, to see how they work.
- To practise simple practical skills eg cutting, folding, gluing, which they will use when making their end product.
- To plan and create their own products using the skills and knowledge they have acquired.
Our lessons follow a half-termly Topic and the weekly lessons incorporate the activities as outlined above, culminating in an end product which is evaluated by the individual and the group. Click below to see examples of our DT work or to find some fun DT activities to do at home :-
