Old Palace School History

Did you know that our school is built on a historic site?
It is said that the 'Old Palace' was used as one of King James
the Firsts hunting lodges in the late 17th century,
but the palace was also used for several other purposes later on.

This sculpture is still outside our school office. Today, the children love to play around it as well!

This is a view of the school from the corner of Bromley High Street.

Between 1810 and 1860, Old Palace was used as a boarding school
and then as a school called 'Tait's Academy'. In 1893, it was bought by Melissa
Hemmingway, who started a colour works on the bottom floor.

In 1893, the London School Board took over the building and a school was built
on the site of the Old Palace. During WW2, the school was used as
a sub station for the Fire Brigade, and as a rescue headquarters.
On Saturday 19th April 1941, the school was completely cut in half
by a heavy bomb and there were many causalities.
The remains of the school were demolished.
A new school was built on the site of the Old Palace, which opened
in 1952 and is the one we are working in now.
