TYPES OF RESOURCES

 

Types of resources available at the Schools Library Services

We have a vast array of resources for every need. In the library you will find all of the following:

 

  • Non-Fiction Books: Covering the whole of the National Curriculum subjects and a wide range of other supporting material
  • Fiction: Board books, picture books, fiction graded readers from beginners to secondary and adult fiction
  • Big books: Divided into fiction, non-fiction, folk tales and nursery rhymes

  • CD-ROMS: Covering many non-fiction areas but also some fiction titles
  • Booksets: For KS1 and KS2 group reading
  • Posters and Picture Packs: Covering all National Curriculum subjects and more
  • Original works of art

  • DVD & Video: Range of fiction, non-fiction, drama and film videos & DVDs
  • CDs & Cassettes: CD's & tapes for all ages of fiction. Also Music and historical cassettes
  • Book and Cassette/CD Packs: Unabridged tape and matching books
  • Playsets: Key Stages 1-4, sets of six copies
  • Artefacts: An extensive collection of artefacts from around the world. In addition there is a collection of world musical instruments and historical artefacts from Britain

  • Suitcases of history: Such as Victorian Britain, the Tudors, Romans, Britain since 1930s etc. Please book these in advance
  • Religious artefact boxes: All main religions and by theme e.g. prayer
  • Story props: Puppets and props from traditional stories and classic fiction to enliven storytelling time
  • Skeletons, torsos and tabards: Supporting the teaching of the human body
  • Electronic babies: For secondary PHSE. Pre-training needed. Please ask for details
  • Costumes: From Nativity play to flappers, from Romans to Victorians, some children's costumes and contemporary traditional costumes

  • Dual language: Fiction, non-fiction and dictionaries for 40+ languages, mainly at primary level
  • Quick reference: National Literacy Strategy, National Numeracy Strategy, schemes of work for key stages 1-3, dictionaries, atlases etc.
  • Multi-sensory stories: For use with children with severe learning difficulties
  • Road safety equipment:Costumes, traffic lights, zebra crossings, posters and more

  • Science artefacts: Weather stations, solar system mats, magnetic kits, life cycle tabards
  • Story Sacks: Bags containing a popular picture book, a related non-fiction title, artefacts to go with the book and a relevant game

 

LITERACY & NUMERACY CENTRE

 

The Literacy & Numeracy Centre is at the heart of the Schools Library Service and houses a whole range of resources to support Literacy & Numeracy hour teaching. It is also model of how to house literacy and numeracy resources within a school.

The Literacy area houses:

  • An extensive collection of bookband sets at all KS1 levels and beyond

 

  • A large collection of big books for shared reading, arranged by level, genre and text type

 

  • An array of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, plays and anthology KS2 guided reading sets

 

  • A collection of games to aid literacy teaching

 

  • A reference collection of recommended QCA texts for Reception classes through to Year 6

 

  • A selection of key texts arranged by genre and text type

 

  • Sample copies of other literacy schemes

 

  • Copies of KS1 SAT's books at level 1 and level 2

 

The following may be found in the Numeracy area:

 

  • Sets of 6 books on specific themes such as time, measurement and data handling

 

  • Various Numeracy schemes

 

  • Examples of good resources for the classroom

 

  • A selection of games that may be borrowed

All resources are carefully selected by Literacy and Numeracy consultants whom work closely with the Schools Library Service.

 

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT COLLECTION

 

The library also houses a Professional Development Collection of books, folders and videos to complement student study and contains educational theory and classroom activities resources. All subscibers to the Schools Library Service are entitled to borrow books from this section. Resources in this area generally have a shorter borrowing period than resources found in the rest of the library.
