Southwark Interactive Whiteboard Project
In July 2004, every Southwark school became part of the Interactive Whiteboard Project, run by the DfES. The project, which started in 2002, aims to:
- increase the provision of interactive whiteboards in schools, to improve, develop and enhance effective pedagogy using ICT
- demonstrate that interactive whiteboard technology can make a significant positive contribution to embedding ICT in the classroom and to raising standards through improved teaching and learning.
Interactive whiteboards can have a positive effect on teaching and learning in all subject areas. As with ICT more generally, the impact on teaching and learning is dependant on how successfully they are integrated into classroom practice.
- Interactive whiteboards are powerful teaching tools, they have the potential to:
- Improve the quality of interactions
- Improve teacher assessments through the promotion of effective questioning
- Enhance modelling
- Redress the balance of making resources and planning for teaching
- Increase the pace of learning
The majority of Southwark primary schools and nurseries have received SMART Boards from Bulletpoint, whilst secondary schools have received ACTIV Boards from Promethan. All schools have also received Easiteach software to use with the new interactive whiteboards.
