Our Canteen

School catering and what is offered to pupils in school dining rooms is very much in the news at the moment. This has been highlighted by Jamie Oliver’s campaign but the government had already begun to talk about the need for a healthy diet and the dangers of obesity.

We would like to explain what Scolarest has been doing at Orleans Park School to
help guide the children towards eating a healthier diet.
In September 2002 we undertook a major refurbishment of the kitchen and dining
area at the start of a new contract with the school. As part of the contractual agreement
we eliminated confectionary and canned fizzy drinks, replacing them with healthier options.
We also removed chips from all menus.
We have also reviewed the cooking processes. We no longer add any salt to our dishes
and we have reduced the fat and sugar content in many of our recipes. We also do not
deep fry any food at all – in fact all the deep fryers have been removed.
All our meals are offered with a free portion of salad or vegetables. Click here to see our menu.
Our main sale items at the moment which are available daily are jacket potatoes and pasta,
both are offered either plain or with hot or cold toppings, such as tomato and basil sauce,
tuna or sweetcorn. These are offered with a free portion of salad or other vegetable.
In line with our healthy eating policy and alongside traditional sandwiches, we offer wraps
and a healthy eating range which exceed no more than 300 calories. These are provided
on various types of bread – prices range from £1.40 to £2.50. We also offer a good range
of paninis and bagels which start from 65p.
We offer a range of Meal Deals at £1.63, covering hot food and sandwiches. This price was
fixed to enable children who receive a free school lunch a more varied choice - below are
just two of our typical Meal Deals:-
Jacket potato philadelphia & sunblush tomato with tuna & coleslaw on wholegrain bread
with fruit or drink.
Obviously we all like home baked cakes and cookies and we offer a good variety ranging
from 40p – 50p. We try to keep these cereal and fruit based where possible and have
lowered the sugar levels in many of our recipes.
We offer a range of drinks including milk, fruit juice and mineral water. We have also had
two chilled water fountains installed in the dining area and the children have free access
to this water.
We hope this has helped to answer some of the questions you may have had concerning
healthy eating at your child’s school and would like to assure you that we will be endeavouring
to continue to develop our healthy eating policy and improve what we offer the pupils of
Orleans Park School.
We have met with the School Council in the past and will be joining them at the first
meeting of the Summer Term, so that they can give us their views on the catering service
we offer.
Richmond upon Thames award star ratings from 0 to 5 for all food businesses in the local area this is a national incentive through the Food Standards Agency and is also commonly known as the Scores on the Doors and we are very proud to say that our school canteen were awarded the highest score of 5 Stars which is an excellent rating for "very high standards of food safety management , Fully compliant with food safety legislation".
