Pupil Grouping Arrangements

On joining the school, pupils are placed in a mixed-ability based tutor group. Pupils are taught in this group for their first year at the school, although for some practical subjects pupils are sub-divided into smaller teaching groups. Mathematics will be taught in ability-based groups during the year.

At the start of Year 8, further setting by ability is introduced. By Year 9, the majority of subjects are taught in ability-based sets.

Pupils normally remain with their Form Tutor for their school career. The Form Tutor is the first point of contact between the home and the school. Pupils meet their Form Tutor once a day for registration and Form Tutors meet pupils on a regular basis to discuss and monitor individual progress. Form Tutors are supported in their work by the Year Team Leader and the Key Stage Coordinator. These staff will work closely with senior staff and outside agencies, when appropriate.
