The history of the school began over a hundred years ago when the Church of St. Matthias stood on the site of the infant playground. A small choir school for boys was opened as a Day School 9th February 1874 . Fields surrounded the church and school and Warwick Lane was lined with trees. Towards the end of the century houses were built on the fields and a new school building was required. It was opened in April 1899 at the cost of £6000 pounds. During the last war the Church of St Matthias was bombed but remained opened until the fifties.

Families like to send their children to the neighbourhood school. As a Church school we welcome children from all faiths and cultures. They and their parents bring to school a rich diversity of languages and ways of life. At any time there are about 26 different home languages. The predominant language varies from time to time and at present it is Arabic.
