History

Pupils learn about people’s lives and lifestyles and how the past is different from the present and begin to recognise why things happen. They learn to ask and answer questions from written and pictorial sources as well as from handling artefacts and going on visits. They are taught to use the language of passing time and to place events and objects into chronological order.

In Foundation Stage the children learn about their own past and how they have changed from when they were babies. They also experience a sense of a 'long time ago' through stories and pictures for example in the book Peepo and Nursery rhymes and songs.

In Year One children explore the homes people lived in. What would it be like to live in a castle or even Hampton Court? The children look at toys that were played with in the past and find out how and why they were different. We all enjoy seaside holidays but how have they changed from Victorian times and is shopping the same as it is now?

In Year Two the children explore how the school has changed over time and go on a detective tour of how can they find out? They learn about Tudor London and how the plague was affected by the Great Fire of London. They look at the life of Victorian children and spend a day at school experiencing what it would be like for a Victorian school child. The study of Florence Nightingale shows the children the impact one person can have on their own times and the future.
