Our School

Our school is a modern, bright building. We have seven classes, arranged over 3 floors, and a newly built nursery which was opened in 2001.

We have two extra rooms for smaller group work, a central computer suite and a new library. We have a large, well-lit hall, containing infant and junior gymnastics equipment. It also serves as an assembly hall and
dinner hall. The playground is on two levels and children can choose where to play
during breaktimes.

There is a pergola in the lower playground
for more relaxing play, and in the upper playground activity equipment which has
been provided by the school association.
There is a pond and conservation area in
the upper playground.

The Governors

The governing body of the school is responsible for its strategic framework by establishing aims, objectives and policies for staffing, finance, premises, curriculum. The Governors work closely with the headteacher and staff in setting standards, promoting school improvement and providing support. The Governing Body has ? members, two of whom are elected by the parents.

School links with the Parish

The School and Parish work very closely together. The children lead Mass for the parish on Holy
Days of Obligation and are encouraged to take
part in parish activities. The school supports the parish preparation programme for Reconciliation and First Communion. The school works closely with the Parish Priest and groups within the
church to build on the Parish/Home /School partnership.

School links with home

We welcome the involvement and support of parents within our school. Parents are vital in supporting their children's learning when helping with homework and becoming involved in class topics, making links between school work and things that happen within the home.

Children need to read at home with an adult on a daily basis throughout their years of primary education and parents can support their children with learning number bonds and their multiplication facts.

There are already many parents who give very valuable service in classes, helping with group work, sharing reading and supporting the classes with practical activities and outings. Any other parents who would like to offer their time are very welcome to contact a member of staff or the headteacher and arrange their visits.

SWOYSA

The St. William of York School Association is open to all parents, teaching staff, support staff and anyone who supports the school.

The aims of SWOYSA are to raise funds and to develop a strong community spirit. Activities include tea afternoons, quiz nights, fairs, discos and balls. These social events provide opportunities for families and friends to relax and enjoy themselves. Parents may choose to serve as a committee member, as a class representative or on an ad hoc basis for specific events. All offers of help are appreciated and valued by the school community.

The monies raised help to provide equipment, help with school trips and fund entertainment for the children.

Recently funded items include a digital projector and interactive whiteboard, new classroom furniture, part-funding of a new reading scheme, outdoor play equipment for our reception class and money to support our 'Creativity Week' and 'Science Week'.
