The 'Ped Pack'

Introduction to the Pack | Leadership Guide | Designing Lessons | Teaching Repertoire |
Creating Effective Learners | Creating Conditions for Learning | Ideas from Practitioners

The DfES have produced a large pack of materials (commonly referred to as the ‘Ped Pack’) which they have distributed to all secondary schools and which is also available on the web. (All the materials on this page and the linked pages have been taken from the Pedagogy and Practice page on the Standards Site, which is currently running very slowly. You can go to the Standards Site, but the page might not open.)

As with many products of this nature, its sheer physical size as a pack, or the sheer quantity of documents on the web, can make it daunting to the user, and there is grave danger that these materials will languish on a shelf unused. This would be a shame, as there are many useful ideas here, and this section of the Lewisham Educational Portal is designed to guide users into making a start in exploring these materials.

The Units are divided into four broad categories:

  1. Units 1-5 Designing lessons
  2. Units 6-11 Teaching repertoire
  3. Units 12-17 Creating effective learners
  4. Units 18-20 Creating conditions for learning
  5. Leadership Guide

Follow the links for an overview of the units in each category, and to download the materials.

We recommend that you start with the Leadership Guide, and then move on to Unit 1: Designing Lessons.

We hope too that colleagues who have made a start on the materials will add their feedback to these pages to help others to take the plunge or to get even better use of them. If you have developed materials to exploit the pack, check lists, flow charts or even detailed documentation, we'd really like you to share it with colleagues. You can upload materials into the Contributions Folder by using the link below, and you can share ideas by using the Discussion Board.
