English as an Additional Language

Access and engagement in geography - EAL
Teaching pupils geography for whom English is an additional language.
This guidance applies the principles of the Key Stage 3 National Strategy
to the teaching and learning of geography for pupils learning EAL.
The guidance is in two parts:
- Sections 1 to 4 are intended for subject leaders of geography and ethnic
minority achievement (EMA) in secondary schools. These sections are designed
to support a departmental meeting focused on reviewing the attainment of
pupils learning English as an additional language (EAL), and should be
read in conjunction with the later sections.
- Sections 5 to 8 are for all geography teachers and their EMA colleagues.
They aim to help teachers support pupils learning EAL in the classroom,
particularly those working at levels 3 to 4 and who have been learning
in English for a minimum of two years, in order to raise their attainment
in geography lessons.
The Strategy has high expectations for all pupils, and the inclusion of pupils
learning EAL is a fundamental principle.
