English as an Additional Language
Copy of the EAL Section on the Standards Site
Access and engagement in D and T - EAL
This guidance is for teaching pupils D&T for whom English is an additional
language. It applies the principles of the Key Stage 3 National Strategy to
the teaching and learning of D&T for pupils learning EAL.
The guidance is in two parts:
- Sections 1 to 4 are intended for subject leaders of design and technology
(D&T) and ethnic minority achievement (EMA) in secondary schools. These
sections are designed to support a departmental meeting focused on reviewing
the attainment of pupils learning English as an additional language (EAL),
and should be read in conjunction with the later sections.
- Sections 5 to 8 are for all D&T teachers and their EMA colleagues.
They aim to help teachers support pupils learning EAL in the classroom,
particularly those working at levels 3 to 4 and who have been learning
in English for a minimum of two years, in order to raise their attainment
in design and technology lessons.
The Strategy has high expectations for all pupils, and the inclusion of pupils
learning EAL is a fundamental principle. This is aimed at Heads of D&T
and EMA teachers.
