Access and engagement in art - EAL

Teaching pupils art for whom English is an additional language

This guidance applies the principles of the Key Stage 3 National Strategy to the teaching and learning of art for pupils learning EAL. It suggests strategies to help teachers support pupils at different points of learning English:

  • to develop their understanding and use of the English language;
  • to enhance their learning in art lessons.

The guidance also considers how pupils' self-esteem can be developed. Pupils cannot derive full benefit from their art lessons unless social aspects of their learning are taken into account. The Strategy has high expectations for all pupils, and the inclusion of pupils learning EAL is a fundamental principle.
