What are the diaries?

4 x sides of A4 photocopied onto A3 and folded in two. The materials support Assessment for Learning.

The front page contains:

  • an overview of what pupils will learn in the unit;
  • a description of the expectations for each of levels 4, 5 and 6;
  • a place for pupils to identify their target level to work at in the unit;
  • the purpose of the diary and how to use it.

The 2 inside pages contain:

  • Learning objectives for each lesson turned into prompt questions
  • A list of vocabulary for each lesson
  • The learning outcome for each lesson
  • A place for pupils to write their answers to the questions, which include some cloze questions and some open questions
  • A 'traffic light' for each lesson so that pupils can let their teacher know whether they are 'doing well', 'coping ok' or 'stuck'.

The back page contains:

  • Questions for pupils to respond to which focus on the learning process itself and encourage pupils to reflect on where they have been successful in their learning and what they need to do to improve in future;
  • A place for the teacher to give pupils feedback on the level of attainment the pupil has been working at in the unit.
