Introducing the diaries for the first time

The following is based on an approximately 50 min – 1 hour lesson and will, therefore, need to be adapted for double lessons.

  • (3 mins) Teacher briefly explains that the purpose of this lesson is for pupils to learn how the on-line diaries can help them with their learning and specifically: a) the purpose of an on-line diary; b) what the diary contains and c) how to enter text and save a page of the diary.
  • (2 mins) Teacher shows pupils how to log onto the school portal with the school ID and pupil password (if pupils haven’t previously been shown this).
  • (5 mins) Pupils log on.
  • (2 mins) Teacher demonstrates how to access a diary following the instructions on the front page of the community, e.g. pupils clicking on: ‘Year 2005 ICT’ tab; ‘My Work’ folder, ‘My Learning Diary 7_1_LM’; ‘home’.
  • (10 mins) Teacher asks pupils to: work in groups of 2/3 to look at the 6 different aspects of the diary; record up to 3 key questions they have and be prepared to feed back to the class on what they have found out, should the teacher select them. Teacher moves round the class listening to the discussions.
  • (10 mins) Teacher asks 6 pupils to briefly feed back to the whole class on each aspect, e.g. how pupils think they will use the ‘student’ page. Teacher asks one pupil from each group to write up to 3 key questions, should they have them, on the IWB.
  • (10 mins) Teacher asks pupils to browse through all aspects of the diary while the teacher moves round the room listening to comments pupils make and responding to questions they have. Teacher then asks pupils if they can answer any of the questions on the IWB. Teacher ticks off questions as they are answered. Teacher then answers any remaining questions.
  • (5 mins) Teacher demonstrates to pupils how to type their name onto the ‘home’ page and save their page. Pupils type their name onto the ‘home’ page and save it.
  • (5 mins) Teacher summarises three key things pupils have learned in the lesson:
    a) the purpose of an on-line diary;
    b) what the diary contains and
    c) how to enter text and save a page of the diary.
    Teacher asks pupils for homework to complete the ‘student’ page of the diary with their personal ICT target for the unit.
  • (2 mins) Teacher shows pupils how to ‘log off’ and then pupils log off from their personal LGfL account.
