Rationale

Rationale for using the Diaries

The diaries can be used to support both teaching and learning.

How can they help pupils learning?

Use of the diaries:

  • encourages pupils to take more responsibility for their learning and set their own targets;
  • makes explicit to pupils what they are going to learn and prompts them to record what they know already;
  • supports pupils to reflect on the individual session content and demonstrate what they have learned;
  • provides a framework for feedback from the teacher;
  • helps pupils to reflect on how effectively they have been as learners throughout the unit.

How can they help with teaching?

Use of the diaries:

  • assists with planning the unit of work;
  • helps teachers to teach to the Primary SoW, KS3 framework objectives and KS4 coursework criteria;
  • helps teachers to maintain focus and pace throughout the unit;
  • supports monitoring of pupils' progress and informs future planning;
  • provides a simple format for teachers to mark pupils' work and provide feedback;
  • informs teachers' annual summative assessment.
