What is the Reading Cafe?
Granton Reading Café runs every Tuesday from 9 – 10am. It is for
parents and carers (including grandparents) of our Nursery, Reception,
Year One and Year Two children.
For the first five or ten minutes parents and carers have a cup of
tea or coffee and some biscuits while enjoying an opportunity to chat
and meet one another. We then spend about half an hour discussing a
topic such as phonics, recognising and praising your child’s achievements,
choosing books, story sacks and the importance of talk. This
discussion is led by a teacher but is kept as practical as possible with
plenty of time for discussion and sharing ideas with one another.
We have also invited guests such as school librarians and drama
groups to run sessions.
For the final 15 minutes the children of the parents and carers in attendance
come out of class and into the café where they choose a
book from our collection of beautiful new picture books and spend
some quality time with their parent or carer enjoying a book together.
We have set up the café to allow for buggies and a play space for
younger children so that parents and carers with younger children
are also able to come.
