History

Through history children are given opportunities to develop an awareness of the past, recognising how it differs from the present.

We encourage the children to recognise that history is exciting and relevant to them. This is achieved through a range of teaching-learning styles to ensure all children have full access to the history curriculum.

We also try to include a range of activities to inspire the children and bring the subject to life through themed days, visits and visitors and specialist weeks.

A range of topics are studied across the school with each year group adopting their own for constancy and understanding of time.

Early years focus on developing the children’s early historical skills through the use of role play, stories and their own experiences and those of them around them.

Year 1 focus on the Tudor period studying various aspects from this time including houses and homes, toys, light sources as well as a general overview of the period looking at Henry the VIII and the rich and poor.

Year 2 focus on the Victorian era looking at the life style in homes and schools as well as studying famous people and events from this time including, Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale, Ismbard Kingdom Brunel, Thomas Stevenson and Thomas Edison.
