As a Science College, Gunnersbury is readily offering its services to organisations that will benefit from the school’s expertise. One such local organisation is the Log Cabin Centre near Northfields underground station. The Log Cabin Children's Centre provides sessions and support for children with disabilities and special needs, and aims to make a positive difference to their lives in a safe caring and fun environment. In conjunction with the centre’s staff and CIP (Community Initiative Partnership) Gunnersbury pupils are helping to develop the 400 sq ft nature area as a learning resource. Pupils have built bird tables and nest boxes and set these into the nature area with a camera to watch the wildlife. We are building vegetable gardens with wheelchair access so that pupils may grow (and then cook !) their own vegetables. We have also created a marvellous “living willow” tent – sit inside and watch nature grow! In addition, the school organises special science classes based around the nature area, where Log Cabin children learn about wildlife, plants, weather and seasons. |
