Special Educational Needs

SEN

At some time in a child's school career she or he may experience difficulties of one sort or another. We understand that this can be an anxious time for parents and children alike and so we provide a caring environment with extra teaching for children who are experiencing problems. We encourage parents to discuss any anxieties they have with their child's teacher, informally at the end of the day, at parents' evenings or by special appointment.

When we identify that a child is not making progress, we look first to our own resources. Class teachers will consult with colleagues, curriculum co-ordinators, the special needs co-ordinator and the Headteacher to provide appropriate support and to develop an individual learning programme.

Some children are given extra support from an appropriate learning support teacher. We always use the advisory staff available from the local authority's education department and parents will be involved in all discussions on their child's special needs.

If, having tried different strategies we cannot adequately meet the needs of your child, we then ask for a full assessment under Section 76 of the 1981 Education Act. You will be fully informed, involved and consulted at all the stages which lead to this fuller assessment. Provision will be made for the child to enable them to progress as recommended in a statement of Special educational needs.

Equally important is the identification of children who are exceptionally able. We ensure that a child with any special talents is suitably challenged, in all areas of the curriculum.
