The National Literacy Strategy is in use throughout the school. All aspects of English – reading, writing, speaking, listening and dramatic action are valued and enjoyed. We hope to foster in our children a love of the world of literature and communication.

All classes have a selection of fiction and non-fiction books for use by the children. There is a reference library – for the younger and older children – to encourage the independent skill of seeking information from an appropriate source. Children are taught to read, using a variety of strategies and a ‘scheme’ of colour banded books drawn from a wide variety of sources. Each colour band is appropriate to a particular stage of reading ability. We know that reading is not only a school activity and ask parents to be involved regularly with their children’s reading progress. There are opportunities for pupils to buy books, from a range of book clubs. The Annual Book Fayre is a great success!

Children are encouraged to write in a variety of forms appropriate to different purposes – creative, imaginative forms, letters, reports, poetry, diaries etc. Writers visit the school, as do theatre groups and story tellers. Children are encouraged to have a sense of pride in their work and are taught how to spell, punctuate and re-draft their work so that it is clear for others to read and enjoy. Clear letter formation and a fluent style of handwriting are encouraged at each stage of the pupil’s development.

Speaking and listening skills are encouraged through a variety of opportunities in every day discussion, reporting to the class, storytelling, drama and role-play. Drama is an activity which ranges from classroom improvisations, assemblies and competitions, to larger productions during the year.
