About the school

The Frances Bardsley School for Girls is one of the oldest schools in Havering.

Our school birthday, in October, is celebrated every year and in 2006 we reach the grand old age of one hundred.

We are now in our one hundredth year and plans have already started for our year of Centenary Celebrations has begun. Hopefully this will attract old girls from all over the world, present pupils and their parents, past and present staff and the variety of local business interests who support the school.

The first school was started, in 1906, by our founder Frances Bardsley in the centre of Romford; her vision was to provide free education for local girls.

So established did the school become that it moved into large new premises on the northern outskirts of Romford and, as result of educational policy, was renamed Romford County High, a selective grammar school for girls.

In the early 1970s the school merged with Heath Park Secondary Modern School as Havering was again re organised into comprehensive schools. Naturally the school reverted to the original name of Frances Bardsley School for Girls

With one hundred years of continuous education in Romford the school is firmly rooted in the past, established in the present community and also looking towards the future. Indeed, the next milestone in our historyhas been achieved as the school has now moved onto one site in Brentwood Road, the school has some of the finest facilities in the area.

We are also moving forward in other respects, Investors in People status, The Gold Art Mark and Sports Mark all serve to illustrate innovation and hard work.

We have gained Specialist School status in the Visual Arts in July 2004. Many exciting activities and changes are planned over the next four years.

Hopefully the next hundred years will be as successful as our first.
