Key Stage 3
Aims
With good indoor and outdoor facilities we aim:-
* to deliver a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum to develop the interest of all girls.
* to give girls of all abilities the incentive to improve their quality of performance in all areas of this subject.
* to develop the physical and social awareness of all girls.
* to develop the girls’ awareness of the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle and to give them an appreciation of the recreational value of all sporting activities.
During years 7 and 8 girls follow courses in Dance, Gymnastics, Netball, Hockey, Trampolining, and in addition to Tennis, Athletics, and Rounders in the summer term. Health and Fitness are an integral part of the Physical Education programme.
Key Stage 3 Strategy
Physical Education has adopted the new Key Stage 3 strategy involving the revision of the previous lesson taught, followed by the air of the present lesson and finishing with the evaluation of the performance of self and of others. This method of teaching thus promotes consistency during the lesson and ensures progression between lessons.
Teaching and Learning
The Physical Education Schemes of Work offers a wide range of learning experiences which caters for all abilities. Physical Education is not all about performance and girls are expected to participate in a variety of ways including answering questions, completing tasks set in work books and teaching each other in group work. Girls are also encouraged to plan strategies involving sequences of movement, set plays in games and to observe, analyse and evaluate the performance of themselves and others. The use of ICT further reinforces girls abilities to analyse strengths and weaknesses and to formulate a plan for improvement.
Assessment for Learning
Girls are actively involved in self assessment using prompt sheets in individual and group tasks. Girls are given targets to achieve that relate to the National Curriculum levels of attainment. All girls are assessed throughout the year at the end of each practical module. In addition to the levels of attainment, girls are also assessed in the four National Curriculum strands of Acquiring and Developing skills, Selecting and Applying Skills, Knowledge and Understanding of Health Related Fitness and Evaluating.
Homework
On occasions girls will be set small pieces of homework relating to their practical activities and using a PE and Dance work book.
Ways In Which Parents Can Help
Encourage your daughter at all times to participate in all lessons and in as many extra-curricular activities as possible, both at lunchtime and after school.
Check that girls have a complete and named P.E. Kit as listed in the School’s uniform list. As parents/guardians you can also help by encouraging your daughter to take part in a health related activity to reinforce the fitness aspect of the subject. This will ensure your daughter progresses to the level expected for her age group.
