PSHE & Citizenship
Both elements of PSHE and Citizenship reflect the fact that education is about helping pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to live confident, healthy, safe and independent lives.
A wide range of subjects are covered in Personal, Social and Health Education, such as:
- drugs, alcohol and tobacco
- emotional health and well-being
- personal finance
- personal safety and first aid
- sex and relationship education

Citizenship education is about helping young people understand the rights and responsibilities they have as members of society. The programmes of study for key stages 3 and 4 Citizenship include:
- human rights
- diversity — national, regional, religious, ethnic
- voting and democracy
- parliament and other forms of government
- media/free press
- voluntary groups
- consumers, employers and employees' rights
- global citizenship
- the legal system
- how to bring about social change
A wide range of teaching methods are used to deliver lessons and active participation in lessons is strongly encouraged.
Assessment in key stage 4
A ‘Certificate in Preparation for Working Life’, AQA examination, is taken by all students in year 10. GCSE Citizenship Studies (short course) is taken by students in year 11. Both courses are assessed by coursework and examination.
