Teaching and Learning

The Geography syllabus offers a wide range of learning experiences that suits the needs of all abilities. Lessons are structured in order to maintain interest and generate enthusiasm for the subject and to reinforce what has been learnt before. Girls are expected to participate actively in lessons in a variety of ways including answering questions, reading aloud, role play and group work. Girls maintain progress from KS2 by learning not just from their teachers or their own individual research but also through the sharing of ideas amongst themselves.

Assessment for learning

In key activities, such as end of unit tests and longer individual enquiries, pupils are given targets to achieve that relate closely to the National Curriculum Summative levels for Geography. Teacher advice and comment informs pupils as to how they can progress through each level so that their potential is realised. In this way, pupils become more independent learners and responsible for their own progress.

Homework

Homework is set regularly according to the school’s policy. Normally each class will be set a common activity which might consist of investigating a particular question or reading, as well as more conventional written assignments. Sometimes girls may have individual tasks to complete such as during an extended project when girls might be working at different rates using differentiated materials.

Ways in which Parents can help

The availability of a good atlas at home will help with many assignments. Geography is about the real world and as such there are many issues in our schemes of work that feature in the news. Discussions at home about such issues will support what we teach.

Key Stage 4

Geography is an interesting and rewarding subject which can give you a valuable understanding of how the world works. If you are interested in topical issues such as conservation and pollution and would like to learn more about other countries and peoples, Geography is a very worthwhile choice.

You will be taught many skills that will help you with your other subjects as well as with Geography. You are taken on interesting visits to collect information first hand by using survey sheets and questionnaires.

The GCSE examination consists of 2 written papers. You will use maps, diagrams, graphs and photographs to help you answer each question. Topics covered include Population Change and Migration, Urban Problems, Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Weather Hazards, Water and Food Supply, Recreation and Tourism, Development and Resource Depletion. Coursework makes up 25% of the total course. Fieldwork visits enable you to complete the coursework enquiry.

If you choose Geography, the subject could help you to enter a wide range of careers.
