Haringey PDC English Resources

These resources have been produced collaboratively by teachers in Haringey with the support of the extended consultancy team.  My thanks to all the teachers whose work appears on these pages with special thanks to Kate Wood and Barbara Bayliss (advance), Alison Boardman, Emily Brooks, and Louise Du Plessis. Nearly all the resources on this page are currently in use in Haringey secondary schools. In the right hand column are some of the more widely used websites generally available to English teachers. Also in the right hand column are resources from the DfES website. Any teachers who have developed ICT based resources are welcome to submit for publication on the site.

The linked documents contain the short and medium term plans for units of work as well as word-processed worksheets. Any worksheets not on the site are available from your KS3 English Consultant.

Poetry

Black British Poetry - a short unit looking at the poems of 3 leading Black British poets.

William Blake - based around some of Blake's better known short poems, the unit offers and introduction to his work, as well as encouraging students to write their own poems and explore the historical context in which writing takes place.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner - an analysis of the poem, persuasive writing, and study of the moving image 'Pirates of the Caribbean', leading to a comparative essay and SATs style end of unit test.

Prose

Autobiography - a short unit looks at different types of autobiographical writing.

Capital Punishment - a short unit with an emphasis on persuasive writing and talk.

Detective Stories - a comparative study of Conan Doyle's "The Man with the Twisted Lip" and "The Speckled Band", this unit also directs students towards some contemporary crime writing of their own.

Street Child - work on a play adapted from Berlie Docherty's novel about street children in Victorian London.

Stories from Diverse Cultures - based around work on several short stories drawn from the Hodder and Stoughton collection, "Stories from Diverse Cultures".

Travel Writing - developed at Alexandra Park School, this unit develops the exemplar unit offered on the QCA Standards Website.

Gulliver's Travels - Three main outcomes: travel writing, an analytical essay, and a final SATs style test.

Drama

Introduction to Shakespeare - some background work on Shakespeare and the theatre of his day, along with the study of short extracts from a variety of popular plays.

Macbeth Scheme of Work to support Y9 SATs (updated) - many thanks to Sarah Spencer at St Thomas More School.

Our Day Out - based around the Willy Russell play, easily adapted for older pupils

Media & Non-fiction

The Iron Giant - a fun unit looking at the animated film and leading to students developing and pitching their own cartoon ideas.

Genetic Engineering - predominantly discussion work, based around issues of cloning, animal research and GM crops

Studying The Simpsons - a short unit, based around the opening credits to the show and episode 1. Teachers will beed a copy of "The Simpsons Greatest Hits" before beginning the unit. Much of the work is oral based.

Children's Television - analysis of genre and development of own TV show.  Also guidance on how to write the opening chapter of a novel.

Living in London - SATs preparation unit based on poetry and non fiction

Speaking & Listening

Speaking and Listening  - a unit developed at Alexandra Park School, exploring different aspects of speaking and listening.

Skills

Library and Research Skills - a short introduction for pupils to using the library. It leads to a written and a spoken piece of researched work.

Year 7 Guided Reading in the Library - these worksheets can be put together in booklet form, to guide students through the process of reading.

Year 8 Guided Reading in the Library - these worksheets can be put together in booklet form to guide students through the process of reading.

Novel

Holes - based around the popular Louis Sachar novel; Holes Oral Work - provides extension work on the novel, setting up a courtroom situation in the classroom.

Skellig - based around the book being read by every Year 7 in the country!

Roll of Thunder - SoW to accompany the teaching of the novel

SATS Preparation

SATs Pack - focused activities and resources to support L5+ SATs attainment in Reading, Writing and Macbeth; it is recommended that appropriate activities are chosen following work/ SATs response sampling, and that the activities are interspersed with Booster Kit materials (NB filesize more than 1Mb - don't download via dial-up)

 The Tempest 2008 - resources to teach essay writing skills for the four different essay types based on the set scenes.

Haringey KS4 Resources 

The Time Machine - a coursework unit based on the H.G.Wells novel; the unit has been designed with a final oral evaluation in mind, but can easily be adapted for essay writing

Jane Eyre This coursework unit focuses on the middle section of the novel, when Jane is engaged to marry Rochester; it is written with a final oral evaluation in mind, but can easily be adapted for essay writing.

Media coursework emergency catch up - a very brief unit devised for use with individuals who have lost a piece of coursework. 

A Christmas Carol - a detailed SoW to accompany the novel

An Inspector Calls - a SoW covering both literature and language coursework outcomes

Romeo and Juliet - a coursework assignment

Exam Techniques - revision resources for AQA English Language Paper 1 and Paper 2 Section B

Northanger Abbey - this is a large file (over 15mb) and may take a while to open.  A pre-1914 novel/original writing SoW based on the gothic genre. Additionally, by studying Edward Scissorhands/Sleepy Hollow the media coursework could also be covered.

Identity - a unit linking exam and coursework featuring AQA Anthology Poems from Other Cultures and original writing

Useful Organisations

English Teaching in the United Kingdom - offers large amounts of information about authors and the curriculum.

National Literacy Trust The National Literacy Trust is a charity that was set up in 1993 to work in partnership with others to enhance literacy standards throughout the UK.

Poetry Society

The Reading and Language Information Centre a very useful web site, full of research, reading and activities to improve the teaching of literacy.

Teacher Resource Exchange - "The Teacher Resource Exchange (TRE) is a moderated database of resources and activities created by teachers. All resources on the TRE are checked by subject specialists to ensure they are of the highest possible quality."

A Word a Day subscribe to 'A Word a Day' to receive an email everyday, detailing the pronunciation, spelling, definition and etymology of that day's chosen word

Visual Thesaurus where you can try out a wondeful piece of software for showing how words are linked in a web of endless possibilities to other words

Footee.net - a highly interactive site has some fantastic games based around football that develop literacy; it also explores a range of other subject areas and is easily adaptable to the ability of the students (adults can easily become addicted, too!)

- bought for all Haringey secondary schools; it saves lots of planning time and helps map out an entire year's curriculum efficiently; visit this site for tips about using the software.

Online literature library - full and unabridged texts of classic works of English literature from authors like Lewis Carroll, the Bronte sisters, Jack London, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and many others, and classic scientific works from Darwin and Descartes.

Bibliomania - more than 2000 free texts, study guides and reference resources.

Commercial Websites and Booksellers

Just For Kids Who Love Books - a huge selection of authors' websites, plus suggestions of new books to read that match childrens' favourites.

Jubilee Books - suppliers with an enormous stock, including a wide range of multicultural texts, as well as a range of authors, storytellers and performers who can visit schools.

Amazon Books - students can post their own reviews on this site.
