Gases Around Us

Recognise that air is a material and that it is one of a range of gases which have important uses, that liquids evaporate to form gases and that gases change shape and flow from place to place;

Teacher background knowledge

QCA/DfES schemes of work for this unit. Learning objectives / outcomes, vocabulary, resources and suggested activities.

Support materials for this QCA unit. Available as a word document from the 4S (Surrey) website. Still there, but you need to register first.  It is free to register and you'll be able to access some other very useful resources.

Key knowledge and progression of ideas. Selected pages from the 4S document above. Very valuable for teachers developing thinking skills in science (Word)

Part of the Chem4Kids website. So there may be useful teaching material here too.

Teaching sites

BBC science clip Brilliant for use on interactive whiteboard / data projector too.

Virtual Experiment 5 & 6 e-learning available online for LGfL users

Science Essentials Web pages from the Channel 4 site deal with this unit.

Changing solid to a gas Multimedia site showing effect of heat on molecules

Air junk, specks flecks and particles in the air Good starting point for pupil investigations

Change of State Particle theory animations alongside a line graph showing melting and boiling points. Most suitable for G&T pupils. From the Footprints science website

Smelling perfume An explanation of how a smell diffuses through the air

Video resources

BBC Learning Zone  There are some excellent clips to use in the classroom linked to this topic. Search under the Investigating heading too !!

States of Matter Bit like a Royal Institution lecture in parts, but with some challenging questions for pupil talk and great images. Use the parts that deal with gases You will need RealPlayer to view these videos.

Science Tube - What stuff does  Aiming to bring the WOW factor back into teaching and learning. From the Teachers' TV website

Science - Gases    Introducing solid, liquid and gas in terms of particle theory and compressibility.  A demonstration clip available from the WSLR introductory page.
