Why do people go on holiday? Where have we been on holiday?

These links have photos and captions of a child’s holiday around several European countries. It is lengthy due to photos and large sized fonts but if a particular place in Europe comes up in class discussion, this child has probably been there!

Where are hot and cold places located on a world map?

 

 

As head of the new National Geographic Climate Observation Post, this task requires pupils to create a Climate Map to illustrate the world's different climate zones. This activity has supporting materials to help teach the different climatic zones which makes it very useful.

 

The world weather website is an excellent link for current weather data as well as forecasts for different places around the world.

Where can we go on holiday? How will we get there?

 

The on-line travel agency E-Bookers is a good website to use not only for worldwide flights and prices but also holidays such as cruises, rail journeys, ferry tickets, hotels and car hire from a range of climatic zones (eg, from ski trips to holidays in the Caribbean).

 

The kids domain family website has 10 top holiday destinations for children with an overview, attractions, things to do and great family fun attractions!

 

 

What is the place like? How is it similar to, and different from, our locality?

 

Click here for the BBC's activities including 5 different climatic zones where children focus on similarities and differences from their locality. Places include Northern Ireland, Norway, Greece, Egypt and the Caribbean. It focuses on housing, clothing and sport. The teacher's section on the left hand toolbar also gives a variety of options for curriculum links and relevant worksheets.

What will the weather be like? How will it affect what we do?

The world weather website is an excellent link for current weather data as well as forecasts for different places around the world.

A downloadable worksheet and activity to support children writing postcards to describe a range of weather conditions and leisure activities that depend on the weather that they experienced on holiday.

The activity could be extended by giving children a research task using the internet to find out about weather conditions for particular days at the chosen destination and then compare them with claims and climate graphs in travel brochures.

Which places have we 'visited'?

 

A downloadable worksheet for children to use as a passport to the world. Includes place, country, continent, climatic zone and other factual data.

As an extension activity use the yahooligans search engine for children to research for extra facts on the place to add into their passport.
