The Lake District

Rhona Dick's excellent portfolio of themed photographs of the region. Includes buildings, earning a living, passing the time and landscape.

Lake District National Park Authority website Posters These are high definition photographs of facets of the LD together with background information and discussion prompts. Ideal for use with a projector for whole class teaching. Coverage comprises: mountain landscape, farming, history, wildlife, climate, water, tourists and cultural heritage.

Get a Map website: allows schools free access to high definition OS maps online. Enter Grasmere into the search window to go straight to the Lake District map. Children could search this to find the hightest mountain in the Lake District. They could then work out a route to climb it. You could also plan the journey and work out how long it would take using Naismiths Rule (nice maths link here).

Google Earth placemark: You'll need to download the Google Earth first but this placemarker will take you straight to Grasmere. Still rather low definition photo for this area, but hopefully this will change soon. If you switch on terrain view (by ticking the box) and use the tilt tool you can fly along the valleys like a stunt pilot!

The Swiss Alps -Zermatt

Panorama tour of the Swiss Alps: Wonderful panoramic tour of the Swiss alps; would make a nice introduction to this work.

Zermatt Amenities: excellent table of information on population, altitude, transport, number of hotels,ski facilities and much more.

Zermatt map: (to access scroll down and click on zoom map) shows the town in enough detail to see individual houses.

In and around Zermatt film (1965) from Pathe: shows transport facilities around Zermatt, a journey on the 'cogwheel railway' and views from cable cars and chairlifts. The film is presented in an interesting alliterative style; 'tourists with tea pots at 10000 feet'! Great for highlighting aspects such as the tourist activities, transport facilities, avalanche dangers.

Panoramas from the Matterhorn: These are truly wonderful 'cubic' views from various points on the ascent. Click the full screen button for maximum impact.

Climbing the Matterhorn film(1965) Tells the story of an ascent of the mountain in the context of its dangerous history. Shows equipment used by climbers including crampons for walking on ice. Also highlights the link between rain in the valley and snow on the mountain -good for discussion.

Zermatt webcams: live views both around town and up on the Matterhorn.

Google Earth Placemarker: with the terrain and tilt on you get a fantastic feel for the location.

Re live Tenzing and Hillary's ascent of Everest in 1953: this excellent resource is aimed at use in class and provides a 6 step story of the ascent together with comprehension questions that draw on an interview with Sir Edmund. What would I need to do to plan a camping holiday in this area?

 

Expedia: children can arrange flights, hotels, transport and activities to do in a mountain area on this website. To make the task more interesting try setting restrictions such as a budget, flight time, sorts of activities etc.

Equipment Lists: Children will need to decide which type of camping trip they are taking from the . This site provides a list of essential equipment.

Cotswold Outdoor. Supplier of camping equipment. Get children to think about the equipment needed for cooking, staying dry and warm whilst walking, for first aid and for sleeping comfortably.
