New web-site for Drugs Education Team

Haringey Drugs Education Team, with funding from the Drugs and Alcohol Action Team, is re-launching its interactive drugs information website for young people. It will be accessible through www.haringeylearning.net/herbonline/ or www.herbonline.info. The website is youth friendly with a cartoon guide directing the user to information about different drugs, the law, health and social risks with medical advice on each drug, including tobacco and alcohol. The spider web home page also enables users to test their knowledge on a quiz that contains different questions on each try and a page of information about local and national help agencies.

Good news about Haringey from Ofsted. Strengths now far outweigh any weaknesses in Haringey Education Services. Good progress has been made and the service is now deemed satisfactory with good prospects for further improvement.

That's the verdict of the Government's Ofsted inspectors who visited Haringey’s Education Services last September and have just delivered their report. read more here.

Transforming GCSE results

GCSE results have improved again this year. Almost all secondary schools have made gains on last year's results - some very significantly. Provisional data shows that

  • John Loughborough school improved from 26% of pupils gaining 5 A*-C to 41%.
  • Gladesmore improved from 30% to 39% ( improving 21% over the last two years).
  • White Hart Lane from 25% to 29% ( improved from 16% to 29% in last two years).
  • Park View Academy increased its figure from 16% to 23%.
  • St Thomas More rose from 33% to 41%.

On average, schools improved by 6% in the past year - a very real change to the situation up to two years ago when results had changed only quite slowly for several years and there was a widening gap with national figures. There is now a real interest in Haringey's successes from the government and a real willingness to see us build on these to transform Haringey into a beacon for similar LEAs.

Haringey appoints new Director of Education

Sharon Shoesmith has now taken up her role as Director of Education.

As Director, Sharon will continue to be employed by Capita as part of its contract with the Council until August 2004, after which she will transfer to the Council’s employment.

Previously as an HMI Sharon inspected both LEAs and schools, and prior to that, worked in York LEA. Sharon has particular expertise in school improvement and inclusion and recently played a lead role in enabling Haringey to achieve a grade one Education Development Plan - only one of six LEAs to achieve the top grade.

Paul Roberts, the former Director under the Capita partnership, will be retained in an advisory capacity until August 2003.

Letter from Sharon about other new appointments to the team
