The Curriculum

Our children in each class follows a broad, balanced and integrated curriculum which embraces all the National Curriculum Subjects.  The curriculum encompasses the following core subjects: Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Science and Information Technology, together with the foundation subjects of Design Technology, History, Geography, Art, Music and Physical Education. Other areas such as Health and Citizenship have direct links with core and foundation subjects and are taught through topic based themes.  Many topics are based around historical, geographical or scientific themes but there are also occasions when some areas are taught as subjects in their own right.

RE
We are a Catholic School and the teaching of our faith is of paramount importance to us in the curriculum we offer.  It is our aim that children will come to learn of God’s love and compassion for everyone.  Through example, commitment and instruction the children are led to develop a loving and trusting relationship with God the Father and his son Jesus through the grace of the Holy Spirit .

English
The three areas of English are Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.  These areas are all addressed through the literacy hour which is followed by all year groups.  Children are encouraged to express themselves clearly and confidently and to listen well.  Naturally, reading permeates through the curriculum and children read daily for information and for pleasure.  Books and reading materials are displayed throughout the school in classes, interest areas and the ground floor corridor.  Writing also permeates throughout the curriculum and the children are taught to write for a variety of purposes and for different audiences.

Mathematics
There is a daily Numeracy lesson for all children in Years 1 to 6 based on the National  Numeracy Strategy.  Children learn mathematics in a variety of ways, for example through practical work, discussions, problem-solving, investigation and constant practice of skills with a particular emphasis on mental calculation.  In Reception Maths is included in day to day activities which is integrated in all areas of learning and achieved through play.

Science
Science is largely practically based with the emphasis being on scientific investigations.  Children cover three main areas in science: life and living processes, materials and their properties and physical processes.

ICT
There are computers in every classroom and we have an ICT suite.  ICT is used across the range of National Curriculum subjects to support your child’s learning. All classes have interactive white boards and we are a lead school within the borough in the dissemination of good practice in using this resource.

Design Technology
Design Technology projects are an integral part of our topic work. Designing and making skills are taught through knowledge and understanding of materials, components and structures.  Working out strategies to improve their designs and models are fundamental to this area of the curriculum.

History
We aim to encourage children to have an active interest in history in order to help them have an understanding of the present, in the context of the past.  Drama, literature and art are all used as means of learning about people in the past and to develop a sense of curiosity in children.

Geography
Through the acquisition of geographical knowledge and skills children will learn about people, places and the environment.  The local area is used as part of the studies as well as the school journey to Pendarren for Year 5 children which has a major geographical focus.

Art
Art is an important tool for learning in the primary curriculum.  Creative work also develops self-esteem and confidence.  The curriculum covers a range of art techniques and skills such as drawing, painting, work with clays and textiles and collage.  Children are taught to appreciate work from a variety of artists and cultures.  Art work is displayed around the school has often the means of displaying work within other subjects.

Music
Music is an integral part of the curriculum with particular emphases placed on composing and performing activities.  Our aim is to make music an enjoyable experience, accessible to every child what ever their ability.  There are opportunities to learn to play an instrument through the music centre of the local education authority, payable in advance.

PE
Lessons are timetabled for a variety of activities such as gymnastics, athletics, swimming, and outdoor activities.  The Key Stage 2 children take part in such sports as football and athletics.  Specialist PE teachers from St Thomas More support the school in the delivery of PE.  Year 5 swim every week and work towards a series of certificates of competence in basic swimming skills.  We also have sports provision by the London Football Academy for Years 1 to 4, who also provide after school coaching, payable in advance, for the children.

Italian
The study of a modern language is an integral part of our curriculum.  Italian is taught once a week in classes from Year 2 to Year 6.

Extra Curricular Activities
We offer a variety of extra curricular activities.  The activities include football, French, and before SAT’s tests for Year 6 science, maths and English.

Homework
Each class is set homework to support their class work. We expect parents to support their children in completing this, as it is an important part of their learning experiences.

Special Educational Needs

The school has no selection criteria based on ability and therefore caters for the full range of abilities.  We recognise that many children at some stage in their education may have a special educational need which may be evident in their learning or other aspects of their development such as behaviour.  We are committed to a whole school approach and aim to ensure that each child has access to the curriculum by adapting our teaching methods and resources to the needs of the whole child.  The class teacher, together with the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) and the parents concerned will work out a programme for the child by means of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which will be regularly monitored and reviewed.  At St Paul’s we aim to identify the Special Educational Need as soon as possible and we encourage parents to contact us an early stage if they feel their child has a particular problem or difficulty

Education for Personal Relationships

This is an important part of our curriculum, firmly embedded in our Catholic ethos.  Issues and exploring relationships, as well as discussing behaviour, are part of the circle time. Health aspects are partly covered by the science curriculum, but we also welcome the support of our school nurse and the Haringey drugs education team in the teaching of this.  We recognise that parents have the ultimate responsibility for informing their children about sexual education and development.  However, we teach the facts of human development within the requirements of the science national curriculum and in the light of the Church’s teaching on life, love and marriage.  We seek to work in partnership with parents in this sensitive task of education for personal relationships.

Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) is done by all classes each week.  The aim of the work is to develop children’s social, emotional and behaviour skills.
