Lesson 5 G Art – make a frieze with captions Learning objective: To understand that Shooters Hill is one of the highest points in greater London and that it is a local landmark. To learn that Shooters Hill Road is the Old Roman Road (Watling Street) which went from London Bridge to Dover and that the road is also known as the A2. Teaching points: Explain that Shooters can be seen from almost all parts of our borough and from many miles around (even the London Eye) if the weather is fine. Tell the children that is a road built by the Romans around 2000 years ago and that it is still the main road from London to Dover. Like all Roman Roads it is straight. Remind pupils of the map where the road can be seen. It is quite unusual in that it goes straight over the top of the hill instead of going round the bottom which would have been a lot easier. Activity: Children to collaborate in a large frieze of Shooters Hill showing the road going over the top. Other features of the hill can be added as the children learn about them. Plenary: Children collaboratively decide on the captions and annotations for the big picture.
