Lesson 1 G Vocabulary and dictionary work Learning objective: To understand that the area to be studied is different from, but about the same size as the immediate locality of the school which was studied in Year 1. To identify the locality on a large scale map and on aerial photographs. Teaching points: Discuss the area visited in Year 1 (The Slade and immediate surroundings of the school). What do the children remember? Explain that this year they are going to study a different locality which is about a mile or so away from the school, but very different. Display the large scale map which shows the area studied in Year 1 and the Shooters Hill and Oxleas Wood locality. Identify the school, the Slade, Swingate Lane and Garland Road. Then indicate the area to be studied and visited this year. Mark on the map Shooters Hill Road, Woodlands Farm, Oxleas Wood, Memorial Hospital and the Water Tower. Activity: Distribute the simplified maps. Children to colour in Shooters Hill Road, and the other features in different colours. Then annotate their maps to show the features. Write a short sentence to explain the meaning of farm, woods, hospital, main road and tower. Plenary: Discuss why the road is a long strip, the woods are a large green area, the tower is a small circle and the hospital is a small geometric plan.
