The Junior Adventure Scheme: Background:

The Junior Adventure Scheme (JAS) has been developed for Primary school children in the London Boroughs of Greenwich and Lewisham. The scheme at its simplest is a 'Duke of Edinburgh' scheme for children in KS2. There are two levels, JAS1 and JAS2. To achieve JAS1 pupils have to go on an adventure, normally of at least 2 days duration and including one overnight (click HERE for details). To achieve JAS2 the pupils must undertake a range of additional activities based around the Environment and PSHE (click HERE for details). The intention is that all activities should include a significant time spent out of doors in a variety of environments. Schools taking part will be able to make use of school journey and day visit centres to develop their activities.

Its aim is to promote:

 a commitment by the individual to develop her/his own learning

 an understanding of sustainability

 an enjoyment of environmental education

 a knowledge of a variety of environments

 developing personal responsibility for the environment

 a spirit of adventure

 greater awareness of risk and personal safety

 consideration for others in the community

 the development of citizenship

For the teacher JAS provides a framework to develop a wide range of activities which will cover many aspects of the curriculum.

For the child JAS provides an opportunity to plan, execute, evaluate and record activities which are interesting and challenging. Their achievements are recognised with certificates and badges.

For the environment JAS develops a way of using the outdoors that is sustaining and not harmful to the environment.
