Year 6

Spring Term 2010 Newsletter

Miss Holland, Mr Douglas & Miss Shaw
We would like to welcome you all back for a very exciting Spring Term!

Literacy

This term we will be continuing to work as a phase in literacy which is proving to be a very productive way of working. The curriculum will be carefully planned to ensure full coverage of the objectives for both year 5 and 6. This term we will be reading and writing a variety of text types, debating current issues and studying poetry by William Blake. We will also be linking some of our work to the school radio station so listen out!

Numeracy

In numeracy the coverage of objectives will include revision on addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. Word problems, using a calculator, shape, space and measures, fractions, decimals and percentages. Problem solving techniques will be well covered in preparation of SATs. All children should be expecting to practise their times tables every week to gain rapid recall.

Topic

This term we will be putting on our deer stalker hats, taking out our microscopes and searching all over the school and beyond as we start our topic ‘Let’s Investigate’. This will involve us finding out about everything around us. We will start by looking at the inventions and innovations that we take for granted, like running water and flushing toilets! We will then go on to consider how transport has changed over the last couple of hundred years. Finally we will look at the history of invention and consider some key figures, for example Marconi and Bell, who have shaped the world with their inventions

After half term we are going to travel into the murky past of Victorian London and consider how the early Metropolitan Police solved crimes with new methods like forensic science. We are also going to be digging up some of our own history when we consider archaeology

Other Information

On Thursday afternoons Michelle Ellrick will teach each class PE on a 6 week rotation. Ms Howes will be teaching art and Mr Harris will teach subjects related to the topic area during this time

Booster classes will be starting soon. These are a great opportunity
For children to really push themselves to the
best level they can achieve

We are hoping to arrange a trip to the William Morris Gallery in
Walthamstow as part of our Art topic on silk painting.
