11th September 2009
Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome to Year 2. We hope you had a fantastic summer and that your children have had a good rest. We are all extremely impressed with how the children have settled into 2A 2B and 2D and are excited about the year ahead

TOPIC- Our topic for this term is ‘Food’ which will be a theme that runs through many areas of the curriculum. The children will be learning about food from around the world, the different food groups and the part that they play in a healthy diet. We will also be looking at other important features of a healthy lifestyle such as sleeping routines, exercise and personal hygiene. Our art focus this term is painting and we will be linking this to our topic by mixing colours to achieve the correct shade and using fine brush strokes to paint fruit and vegetables.

MATHEMATICS- In mathematics we will continue to work on the children’s number skills, weighing and measuring and we will be working with 2D and 3D shapes. The children will be learning to recognise the pattern in a number sequence and use this to extend the sequence e.g. odd and even numbers. They will be developing their ability to partition numbers according to their own ability and when they are ready to use this to aid addition and subtraction of numbers with multiple digits.

LITERACY- In literacy, we will be looking at a range of texts from which the children will complete a variety of activities. 2A, 2B and 2D will also be working in mixed class groups on their phonic knowledge daily.

HOMEWORK- We will be sending home mathematics and literacy based homework throughout the term to support the children’s learning and this should be completed with adult support at home. You can also support your child’s learning by reading with them and to them frequently and ensuring that they learn their key words and spellings each week. Please feel free to mark the homework with your child and give them instant feedback.

ROLE PLAY-  Role play is an important part of the children’s learning at school and each class will have a role play area that is linked to the topic. If you have any role play toys or dressing up costumes that you no longer need and that are in good condition, please speak to your child’s class teacher.

We anticipate that this will be a successful year and the children will make heaps of progress. In order for the children to achieve their full potential, they need the opportunity to practise what they are learning in school at home. If you are unsure of how to support your child at home, please speak to a member of the Year 2 team at the end of the school day.

Thank you for your support,

The Year 2 Team
