Victorian Painters

Class 5 have been painting in the style of Pre-Raphaelites as part of their project on the Victorians.

Seven young men calling themselves the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (P.R.B.) gathered together in London in 1847.  They turned for inspiration to the art of the Middle Ages, the time "before Raphael". Their subjects were drawn primarily from literature, including the Bible, Shakespeare, and the poets of their own.

Anna wrote about the work:

" In the art lesson, Year 5 were each given a sheet of paper and drew a pencil outline of Ophelia, and then coloured it with felt tip pens.  We each used lots of shades of blue and tried to show what the river looked like and how the water moves.   We drew flowers, leaves and grass.  Then we drew the figure of Ophelia lying in the water.  It was difficult to recreate the affect of the material of the dress floating in the water.

We wet our paintbrushes and brushed over the felt tip colouring to merge the colours and create a blurred effect.  So that Ophelia looked as if she was in the water we put a layer of green tissue paper over our work and stuck it down."
