Maths

How much is Maths really associated with day-to-day life? Who needs to use Maths? The answer to these questions to everything and daily. From using money at the corner store to telling the time, we all need to use some form of Maths.

When children arrive at West Acton they will be exposed to a variety of learning opportunties. They will begin to use and learn about Maths in Nursery through to Year 6, progressively. Children will learn about Number, Calculations, Measurements, Shapes & Space, Data Handling and Problem Solving. Children will be taught mathematics in a fun and practical way, they will be able to apply real-life skills to Maths.

When children have developed the basic skills in Mathematics we can then begin to investigate the different properties of maths, which will lead to a wider understanding of the usages of maths. Children will be expected to solve problems, investigate and apply their knowledge across different subjects: Science, Geograhy, Art, the list goes on.

It is also important to practice Maths regularly at home, whether it be times tables, telling the time or paying for things at the shop. At the beginning of each year a set of targets will be sent home for each child, the aim is for the child to learn the basic skills and apply them to different contexts.
