Literacy at West Acton

The development of a child's language skills is most important; as it is the medium through which all other learning takes place within school and in the world at large. This gives English and Literacy a special place at West Acton.

What is taught ?

Literacy at West Acton is taught in line with National Curriculum and the Primary Strategy. Special emphasis is given to the following areas:

  1. Writing
  2. Reading
  3. Speaking and Listening
  4. Drama
  5. Handwriting
  6. Spelling

Enhancing Pupil Progression

At the end of each term, children will be given a set of targets for Literacy. Children will have a copy of these targets at home and school.

Read at Home

Develop reading skills at home. Endeavour to listen or read to your child each day. Share with your children what you're reading and why. Reading should be an enjoyable and relaxing time spent with your children. Read a variety of texts: picture books, chapter books, comics, newspapers, magazines etc

Writing at West Acton

Special importance is placed on Writing, with a great variety occuring within Literacy and across the curriculum. Emergent writing is encouraged in Nursery and Reception with creative writing tables and role-play areas. Writing is developed across the school with children learning a cross-section of genres and skills.

As part of the 2006/2007 academic year children will be taking part in 'BIG WRITE', this program aims to develop a variety of basic literacy skills in fun and interesting ways.
