History

During their time at Oaklands children study range of historical topics in both the Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Aims and Objectives

Using the National Curriculum as a guideline, key historical skills will be developed as children progress through the school. These are:

Chronology

The ordering of time into dates and periods and the associated language.

Historical knowledge and understanding

How people lived in the past and the main features of particular periods and societies.

Interpretations of History

Understanding that historical events may be seen from more than one point of view.

Historical Enquiry

Using historical artefacts and visits to historical sites to help generate and answer questions about the past.

Organisation and communication

To communicate an understanding of the past through non-fiction writing and informed discussions using appropriate historical vocabulary.

QCA schemes of work will identify the introduction, consolidation and development of these key concepts and skills.

Differentiation and SEN

Planning of history topics will incorporate differentiation and take into account IEPs. Work will therefore be pitched at an appropriate level through the use of a variety of different strategies that include:

stepped tasks
open-ended questions
appropriate resources (including VAK resources)

teacher help
a range of class management techniques
clear objectives
opportunities to use ICT.

Opportunities for assessment will be identified when planning learning outcomes. Children will have on going teacher assessment, with examples of work submitted to portfolios where appropriate.

Visits and Drama

Children will be given opportunities to visit museums take part in drama workshops and historical sites related to topics studied. This is an effective way to increase their understanding of the past.

Cross Curricular Skills and Links

History pervades every aspect of our lives and culture. History can make a major contribution to cross-curricular elements in the development of key concepts, skills, values and attitudes. Refer to programmes of study in other subjects e.g. music, dance, physical education and art.

Equal Opportunities

The scheme of work and teaching strategies in history should:

ensure equal access to the curriculum for all
ensure sensitive treatment of gender and ethnic and religious issues
avoid stereotyping.
