Last Wednesday (29th January) saw the start of the sporting calendar with the Mayfield Athletic teams taking part in the heats of the Indoor Borough Athletics.
After the moans (‘Do we really have to walk all the way to Greenford?’) and a long arduous walk of 12 minutes, in order to catch the 105 bus to Featherstone Sports Hall, the athletes arrived with their minds firmly focused on the two most important aspects of the day. ‘Where’s the toilet?’ and ‘When can I eat my crisps?’
The competition began with the first three events; the javelin, the speed bounce and the chest throw.
First up were our speed bouncers, Adam and Raabiah. Adam as always put in his usual steady performance, whilst, the athletic find of the year and making her inter-schools debut, Raabiah, overcame a nervous start to put in a solid performance on the mats. Waleed and Yelda, representing the ‘B’ team were equally impressive and matched the combined score of the ‘A’ team to finish the event in joint 3rd place.
The Javelin throwers, Leon and Zia found it difficult to overcome the differences in the competition javelins but pulled through to win the event. Sudiekha and Leevi represented the ‘B’ team.
Chest Throw saw Nathaniel and Luanna represent the ‘A’ team and Jama and Rageena, the ‘B’.
The next set of events included the Vertical and the Standing Long and Triple Jumps. Izzabel and Eden both put in solid performances in the Vertical Jump for the ‘A’ team with Freya and Hussein representing the ‘B’.
The Long and Triple Jumps both included outstanding performances by the ‘A’ team representatives with all four completing personal bests in the events.
In the Standing Long Jump, Reese jumped 2.10m whilst Amyna jumped 1.80m. In the Standing Triple Jump, Sholeh jumped an incredible 5.80m whilst Shakir was close to the borough record with an astounding jump of 6.10m. Jumping for the ‘B’ team were Freya and Hussein in the Vertical Jump, Aisha and Blaine in the Standing Long Jump and Victoria and Ibrahim in the Standing Triple Jump.
The running races were next with Sholeh and Eden in the 1 Lap, Amyna and Shakir in the 2 and Zia and Nathaniel in the 3. Representing the ‘B’ team were Victoria and Leevi in the 1, Yelda and Waleed in the 2 and Aisha and Ibrahim in the 3 Lap.
The final events of the day were the relays.
First of these was the 4 x 1 Lap, followed by the Over and Under and finally the Obstacle.
Representing the ‘A’ team in the 4 x 1 were; Luanna, Nathaniel, Sholeh and Reiss. For the ‘B’ team it was; Sudeikha, Leevi, Blaine and Rageena.
For the Over and Under the ‘A’ team consisted of Leon, Izzabel, Shakir and Zia. ‘B’ team were; Hussein, Aisha, Jama and Victoria.
The Obstacle was the final event of the day. Taking part for the ‘A’ team were; Eden, Raabiah, Adam and Amyna and for the ‘B’; Ibrahim, Yelda, Waleed and Freya.
With all the events completed; the ‘B’ team came a remarkable 7th whilst the ‘A’ team finished the heats in 1st place and take their place in the Finals on Thursday 6th March.
