Becta Press Release - Tuesday November 6th 2007

28 winners in national school ICT Excellence Awards

Schools and education services up and down the country are celebrating their success today after being presented with awards at Becta's annual ICT Excellence Awards.  The winners were presented with their awards at a ceremony at the International Conference Centre in Birmingham last night (5 November).

The ICT Excellence Awards are run annually by Becta, the Government's lead partner in the strategic development and delivery of its technology strategy for schools. The awards reward schools that have used technology in outstanding or innovative ways, benefiting their whole community, inside and outside the school building.

From video conferencing with a home tutor, to school radio stations and interactive PE lessons, the winners of this year's ICT Excellence Awards have all taken remarkable steps to improve the quality of education for their pupils, improve their results, and turn their schools into exciting and stimulating places to learn.

Stephen Crowne, Becta's Chief Executive, said, "We have been lucky enough to have visited many, many schools who have demonstrated spectacular uses of technology for learning. Picking the winners of this year's awards was an extremely difficult, but enjoyable, task for our judging team.

"We know from the great practice going on in our best schools that technology is already being used very effectively at the heart of teaching and learning. We also know that, although many schools are doing a lot of things well, only a minority are really bringing it all together in a way that transforms the experience of learners.

"I am delighted to present these awards that recognise the hard work and progress that has been made by all the schools and local authorities in bringing it all together, and the way that their learners are benefiting."
