Woodside has a thriving Steel Band who, as well as playing for school events, also play at events in the community. The band consists of around 20 year six children who are taught for an hour a week by Mr Dowie and who come in to school early in the morning in order to practise. Every child in year 5 is given the opportunity to have pan lessons for six weeks, then around Easter time, Mr Dowie chooses the children who will make up the band. This is mainly done on playing ability, but behaviour has to be an issue also as the children will be representing the school in the wider community.

It takes until the summer term for the band to have a large enough repertoire to play at events. This year, as well as the Woodside Schools’ Summer Fair, they  also have performances at St John’s Church Summer Fair in Selsdon; a garden party at Wilhelmina House;  Bromley and Croydon shopping centres.  They will also be performing at the Fairfield Halls on July 9th at a Steel Pan Extravaganza.  These outside events always engender very positive feedback.
